Bold headline, but yes, my Mother's Day did suck.
I'm not sick or dying, so I'll start with that. I have the luxury of my Mother's Day just sucking. But part of it was because I found out on Friday afternoon that our healthcare insurance miraculously became inactive, and you can imagine how easy it was to get a knowledgeable Cigna representative on the line Friday at 3 pm to help me out. They are fully embracing No Meeting Fridays over there. I'm so glad everyone at Cigna engages in such excellent self-care.
I could not resolve it (and we're still trying), so I loudly declared, "No one is allowed to fall this weekend because we can't afford it!" So, I really set the tone for a good time.
We tried to hike on Sunday but spent most of the time in heavy traffic. The walk was lovely, but I was worried about someone tripping, skinning a knee, getting stung by something, or having a tummy ache, so… it was not relaxing. Nothing like being on high alert on a nature stroll! "No, you cannot pet that dog!! Stay away from that falling leaf!" Cool.
After, my son handed me his homemade card (he said he made me one at school but lost it, so this was the replacement). And hey – how can you do anything but smile when a little kid, your little kid, illustrates you like this:
Here is a couple from my producer Julie’s kids:
This week's Parenting is a Joke podcast episode features the incredible comic, actor, and mom Tig Notaro.
We talk about her kids, her career, and also
her days working at a daycare center and why it was really good for her
how she and her wife are researching schools that don't give out homework
her son asking if she was a boy or a girl
what sport she thought the Maple Leafs played.
And how "sit by the front door" is the most significant punishment she doles out.
Want some more dark Mother's Day content? I've got it!
Mother's Day is fraught for many of us. My mom died just before the pandemic, and I will say that I hate how I get marketed to like crazy leading up to Mother's Day with all the great ideas of what to get her. How do the bots stealing my privacy not know? How?
This year I took matters into my own hands, you can watch/ listen to the letters I wrote to brands and stores in last week's episode or enjoy this Instagram Reel.
Also, should I learn how to run? I’ve never been able to do that. Just thinking out loud.
Until next week…
